At Shift Materials (SHIFT), our mission is clear: to enable a resilient, sustainable and fully European battery value chain. As a Norwegian SME specializing in the production of high‑quality and cost‑effective LFP/LMFP cathode active materials, we are committed to advancing energy‑storage technologies that are both environmentally responsible and industrially scalable. Our participation in the BeyondBattRec project allows us to bring this mission to life in collaboration with leading European partners.
Why recycling matters for LFP production
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are rapidly gaining momentum across Europe due to their safety, long cycle life, and resource efficiency. However, even LFP materials must be responsibly recovered and reused to ensure that battery production aligns with true circular economy principles. At SHIFT, sustainability is not an add‑on—it is integral to how we innovate and operate.
We therefore integrate recycled materials directly into our production processes and have developed in‑house capabilities to regenerate spent LFP cathodes. This approach reduces waste, minimizes dependency on raw material imports, and lowers the overall carbon footprint of battery manufacturing.
SHIFT's role in BeyondBattRec
Within the BeyondBattRec consortium, SHIFT plays a key role in validating the technical feasibility of recycling‑based battery materials. Our contribution focuses on three core activities:
- Implementing methodologies for optimized recycling and reuse
Together with our project partners, we develop and apply practical protocols that increase efficiency and selectivity in the recycling chain. This ensures that recovered materials retain the quality required for high‑performance LFP batteries.
- Evaluating recovered battery materials in real production scenarios
SHIFT assesses whether recycled and regenerated cathode materials meet battery‑grade quality standards. This step is critical—only by reusing recovered materials in real LFP production can we demonstrate that recycling is not just a sustainability ambition, but a reliable industrial pathway.
- Closing the loop with proof of‑quality LFP products
By incorporating recovered materials into our manufacturing processes, we generate tangible evidence that high‑quality LFP cathodes can be produced sustainably. This helps establish confidence across the value chain—including manufacturers, recyclers, and end‑users—that recycled materials can compete with virgin inputs.
Shaping a More Circular Battery Future
The BeyondBattRec project aligns closely with SHIFT’s vision of a circular, secure and high‑performance battery ecosystem. By showing that recycled materials not only can—but should—be used in LFP production, we contribute to strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in energy storage.
Together with our partners, we are showing that the future of sustainable battery innovation lies in smart design, efficient recovery, and responsible reuse. And that future is already taking shape—one regenerated cathode at a time.
